About Dodge County

Dodge County is one of the eight counties proclaimed by acting Governor Thomas B. Cuming on November 23, 1854, and was named for Senator Augustus C. Dodge of Iowa, a backer of the Kansas–Nebraska Act. The Platte River forms its southern line and the Elkhorn River crosses it from northwest to southeast. The Mormon Trail and then the military road to Fort Kearny followed the Platte valley, and the Lincoln Highway, now US 30, later took the same route.

The first commissioners met at Fontanelle in 1857; when the Elkhorn was made the county's east line in 1860, Fontanelle went to Washington County and Fremont became the seat. Centerville, which held the first county fair in 1872, lost a county-seat vote in 1884. The Union Pacific reached Fremont at the end of 1865 and built west past Ames and North Bend in 1866; the Elkhorn Valley line (1869–71) founded Hooper and Scribner, its Albion branch of 1886 founded Snyder and Dodge, and a Burlington line built in 1905–06 added Uehling and Winslow. The present courthouse in Fremont was built in 1917–18 and is on the National Register. The 2020 census count was the county's highest.
