About Winslow
Winslow is a village on the Elkhorn River bottoms near US 77, about 2 miles east of Hooper and 14 miles north of Fremont. The March 2019 flood damaged every building, and only 19 people were counted in 2020. Most of the bought-out lots are now permanent green space.
History
Winslow was platted in 1906 and incorporated on May 28, 1909; the origin of its name is not known. Its volunteer fire department was founded in 1911, and in 1920 the village had two banks, a general store, two elevators and a German Lutheran church. The population peaked at 156 in 1930. The Elkhorn flooded the town in 1912, 1996 and other years.
On March 14, 2019, the Elkhorn put up to five feet of water through Winslow. The village board voted to move the town to higher ground, and in 2020 the Legislature passed LB1003, which allows a village to relocate. FEMA bought about 30 flooded properties for $2.25 million by 2022, and a plat of about 80 lots was drawn for a hilltop site beside Logan View High School on US 77. By late 2024 the effort had stalled, with about 13 to 15 homes left on the old site.
