About Crowell

Crowell is a former railroad village in Pebble Township, northern Dodge County, about 5 miles northwest of Scribner near US 275. Its site is estimated from the plat description; what still stands there is not confirmed.

History

A small settlement called Oak Springs lay southwest of the site, and a Crowell post office opened in 1872 on a farm about three-quarters of a mile east. The Elkhorn Land and Town Lot Company platted the village on December 22, 1883, on the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad, and the post office moved to the depot. Sources disagree on the name: it honors either the man who built the first elevator or railroad official Prince S. Crowell.

Crowell soon had a store, grain warehouses, the City Hotel, a livery, a hardware store and a blacksmith, and its grain and livestock shipments were large for its size. It had about 50 people in 1890 and 100 in 1920. Mail service moved to Scribner in September 1924. Nearby, near Dead Timber, were Catherine and Manhattan, early county seats that existed mostly on paper.
