About Scribner

Scribner is a city of 843 on US 275 and NE 91 beside the Elkhorn River in northern Dodge County. It has Scribner-Snyder schools, the Scribner Area Medical Clinic, the public library, the Musbach Museum and the Dodge County Fairgrounds, home of the Dodge County Fair. Dead Timber State Recreation Area is just north on US 275.

History

Lucius D. Richards platted Scribner in 1870 as the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad arrived, and it was named for the New York publisher Charles Scribner. The rival village of Pebble, platted just to the west the same year, faded once the railroad chose Scribner. The population peaked at 1,066 in 1930.

Scribner Army Airfield opened southeast of town on December 9, 1942, training B-17 and B-24 bomber crews and, in 1943–44, P-47 fighter pilots; it closed at the end of 1945, later served as a Strategic Air Command relocation site until 1959, and is now Scribner State Airport. Floods on the Elkhorn and Pebble Creek ended rail service in 1982. George Dern, governor of Utah and U.S. secretary of war, was born near Scribner.
