About Uehling

Uehling is a village of 241 on US 77 in the Logan Creek valley of northeastern Dodge County, about 9 miles south of Oakland. It has St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a bank branch, the Scoreboard Cafe and Ed's Bar; students attend Logan View schools on US 77 to the south.

History

Theodore Uehling, a German immigrant who settled here in 1860 and built up about 1,000 acres, sold 68 acres for a townsite in 1905, and the village was platted on December 6, 1905, on the Burlington line between Ashland and Sioux City. The track arrived on February 17, 1906, and Uehling incorporated on November 20, 1906. Waterworks followed in 1909 and electric lights in 1914, and the Uehling Post was the town paper. The population peaked at 297 in 1930.

His son Frank Uehling built an octagonal round barn about 80 feet across in 1918; it was listed on the National Register in 1985. Swedish settlers founded the Swaburg colony nearby in the 1870s. The Uehling Fun and Follies Association runs community events, including a Halloween party on October 25, 2026.
