Sandhills Nebraska
The largest sand-dune region in the Western Hemisphere
The Nebraska Sandhills cover about 20,000 square miles, roughly a quarter of the state: grass-covered dunes, typically 120 to 300 feet high, with some 2,000 shallow lakes and wet meadows between them, lying over the High Plains (Ogallala) Aquifer. Cherry County, Nebraska's largest at 5,960 square miles, sits at the heart of it. The twelve Sandhills counties had about 22,700 people in 2020, and several have fewer than one person per square mile. This is ranch country, with the Niobrara National Scenic River, two national wildlife refuges, the largest hand-planted forest in the United States and the state's first International Dark Sky Park.

The Twelve Counties of the Nebraska Sandhills
The Sandhills are the largest sand dune field in the Western Hemisphere and one of the largest grass-stabilized dune regions in the world — roughly twenty thousand square miles of grass-anchored dunes lying over the Ogallala Aquifer. The water table sits close enough to the surface that thousands of shallow lakes and wet meadows fill the valleys between the hills, and groundwater-fed rivers rise among the dunes: the Dismal, the Middle Loup, the North Loup and the Calamus, while the Niobrara crosses the north.
Because the sod was never broken, this is ranch country rather than farm country, and it has stayed that way ever since. The counties here are among the emptiest in the United States — several hold fewer than one person per square mile, and Brewster in Blaine County had 12 people in 2020, one of the smallest county seats in the nation. The night skies are correspondingly dark, and each spring sharp-tailed grouse and greater prairie-chickens return to their dancing grounds.
Where the region ends and the landform does not
The twelve counties below are the ones that lie almost entirely within the dunes. The Sandhills themselves do not stop at those county lines. Northern Custer County carries dunes but is filed with Central Nebraska; southern Sheridan County does too, and belongs to the Panhandle. Along the northern edge, Brown, Rock, Keya Paha and Boyd counties sit where the dunes give way to the Niobrara valley and the prairie beyond it, and they are covered under North Central Nebraska. If you are planning a trip around the landform rather than the county map, those pages are worth reading alongside this one.
The Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway — Highway 2, 272 miles from Grand Island to Alliance — is the classic drive across the region, and Halsey in Thomas County holds the largest hand-planted forest in the United States.
