About Hyannis

Hyannis is a village of 165 people (2020), the seat of Grant County and its only incorporated town, at about 3,757 feet among the lakes and dune ridges of the western Sandhills. NE 2, the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway, runs east–west through town beside the BNSF main line, and NE 61 shares it for about 1.7 miles, leading north to Merriman and south to Arthur and Ogallala. Hyannis has the county courthouse with the county museum and library, Hyannis Area Schools, a weekly clinic, a post office and the nine-hole Pelican Beach Golf Course, and three state wildlife areas with public lakes lie within 2 miles. The nearest hospital is in Alliance, about 58 miles west. Hyannis is on Mountain Time.

History

The Burlington’s Grand Island & Wyoming Central built west through the county in 1886–88, and Hyannis was laid out in 1888, named by a railroad official for Hyannis, Massachusetts. Whitman was the first county seat, but Hyannis soon won an election for it, and the record books had to be carried off from Whitman. By 1890 Hyannis had about 200 people, three general stores, a lumberyard, a drugstore, a blacksmith, a saloon, a hotel and livery, and a newspaper, the Tribune; postmaster H. R. Dellinger is remembered in Dellinger Avenue. The Hotel DeFair was built in 1898, and Hyannis and Whitman became two of the busiest cattle-shipping points on the line. The county put up a frame courthouse in 1907 and the present one in 1957–58. The village reached 449 people in 1940. In March 2026 Hyannis was evacuated for a day as the Ashby and Minor wildfires burned nearly 50,000 acres nearby. Legislator Al Davis, stuntman Chuck Hayward and rodeo rider Skeeter Thurston are among the people associated with Hyannis.
