About Grant County

Grant County is lake country in the western Sandhills: long east–west dune ridges with wet valleys between them, holding dozens of small lakes, many of them alkaline. Its only incorporated town is Hyannis, the county seat; Ashby and Whitman are unincorporated railroad towns on NE 2, each with a post office. It borders Cherry County on the north, Hooker on the east, Arthur on the south, Garden on the west and Sheridan on the northwest. It is the fourth least populous county in Nebraska and is on Mountain Time.

Surveyors in 1876 wrote off the south-central country as “worthless sandhills,” but Texas longhorns came up the trails in 1877 and proved the grass. The Burlington built west through Whitman, Hyannis and Ashby in 1886–88, and the Legislature created the county on March 31, 1887, naming it for Ulysses S. Grant. Whitman was the first seat until Hyannis won an election and its people carried off the county records. Kinkaid Act homesteaders came after 1904, the county peaked at 1,486 people in 1920, and Hyannis and Whitman shipped cattle by the trainload. In March 2026 the Morrill Fire reached the county, and on March 26 the Ashby and Minor fires burned about 50,000 more acres and forced the evacuation of Hyannis and Ashby for a day.

Travel Corridors

NE 2 — the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway, the length of the county through Whitman, Hyannis and Ashby beside the BNSF main line. Highway 2 Corridor → NE 61 crosses it at Hyannis, running north to Merriman and south to Arthur and Ogallala. No Interstate or U.S. highway enters the county.

Lakes and Outdoors

Three state wildlife management areas near Hyannis have public lakes: Frye Lake (243 acres, about 2 miles northeast), Avocet WMA (Beem Lake, about 120 acres, just east of town) and DeFair Lake (70 acres, about 2 miles south). Game and Parks built new concrete ADA boat ramps and docks at Beem and Frye in 2025 with a $690,000 boating-safety grant; Frye was closed during construction, so check its status before you go. The areas are also open to hunting. Most of the county’s other lakes are on private ranches. Pelican Beach Golf Course east of Hyannis is a volunteer-built nine-hole course with honor-box fees.
