History

Pawnee County was established in 1854 and named after the Pawnee Nation, whose homelands once extended across much of central and southeastern Nebraska. Early settlement centered on the Nemaha River valleys and the rolling prairie that supported farming, milling, and small frontier communities. Pawnee City, founded in the 1850s, became the county seat and developed into a regional hub for trade, education, and civic life. Table Rock, Burchard, Steinauer, and Du Bois grew as agricultural and rail‑supported towns, each contributing to the county’s rural identity.

The county’s history reflects pioneer migration, Native heritage, and the development of small towns that supported farming, livestock, and early transportation routes across southeastern Nebraska.
