Burchard was platted in 1881 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad was extended to the site, and named in honor of a local minister surnamed Burchard. Incorporated as a village in 1884, Burchard is best known as the birthplace of silent-film comedian and producer Harold Lloyd (1893-1971) — his birthplace at the corner of Pawnee and 4th Streets is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lloyd's brother Gaylord, also an actor and assistant film director, was likewise born in Burchard.
