About Lewiston

Lewiston is a village of 55 in northwestern Pawnee County, reached by spur S-67A from NE 4, about 16 miles northwest of Pawnee City and 18 miles east of Beatrice. Lewiston Consolidated Schools serves the area from a single PK–12 campus at 306 Tiger Ave.

History

Lewiston was platted in 1886 when the Chicago, Kansas & Nebraska Railway, part of the Rock Island system, built through Turkey Creek precinct; by 1890 it was a station with about 75 people. The source of the name is not certain; Fitzpatrick suggested Lewiston, Maine, or a local resident. The population peaked at 187 in 1930. About 5 miles east-southeast stood Mayberry, named for pioneer Charles N. Mayberry, which had a post office from 1884 to 1934.
