Table Rock takes its name from a large, flat-topped rock formation on the north fork of the Nemaha River near the original townsite. Platted in 1855, the village remained largely a "paper town" until 1856-57, when an Episcopal minister led roughly 200 families from Pennsylvania and New York to settle it; Table Rock narrowly lost the county-seat election to Pawnee City by just 16 votes. Flooding in 1858 nearly emptied the settlement, but Czech and German immigration in the following decades, along with the arrival of the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad, helped it recover. Today Table Rock holds four separate National Register of Historic Places listings, an unusually dense concentration for a village its size, including the Table Rock Opera House and Public Square Historic District.
