About Hoffland

Hoffland is the site of a former potash company town on NE 2 and the BNSF railroad in southwestern Sheridan County, about 11 miles east of Alliance and 4 miles west of Antioch, near Jesse Lake, at about 3,914 feet. No current source documents what remains.

History

After a mineral claim was filed on Jesse Lake in 1912, the Potash Reduction Company built the first plant in the Sandhills potash district here, with a company town named for Hoffland, Norway. It produced about 100 tons a day and had about 600 people, and its post office ran from 1916 to 1927. The American Potash Company plant was about 4 miles east. Hoffland's plant was the last in the district to close, shipping its final carloads on October 12, 1922. The town was never incorporated; History Nebraska has a 1955 photograph of its ruins.
