This History Nebraska marker is in a pull-out on the north side of NE 2 in Antioch, about 15 miles east of Alliance. It tells how potash recovered from Sandhills alkali lakes made Antioch a boom town after World War I cut off German supplies: production began in 1916, five plants were running by spring 1918, and the town grew to about 2,000 people before prices collapsed and the last plant closed in 1921. The concrete ruins, listed on the National Register in 1979, are visible from the highway.
