History

A Chaui Pawnee village stood here in the late 1700s. Emigrants on the Mormon Trail along the north bank of the Platte steered by the Lone Tree, a big cottonwood about 3 miles southwest of town that served as a landmark from the 1830s and blew down in 1865; a stage station took its name in 1858. The Union Pacific built through in 1866 and platted a town called Lone Tree that fall, and voters made it the county seat on October 12, 1869. It was renamed Central City in 1875, its backers feeling the old name suggested a lonely place. The Burlington arrived in 1880, and the town boomed with banks, mills and an opera house. From 1899 to 1953 the Quakers ran Nebraska Central College here; its main building now houses Nebraska Christian Schools. The present courthouse was dedicated in 1913. Novelist and photographer Wright Morris was born here in 1910. Central City reached 3,083 people in 1980.
