About Tecumseh

Tecumseh is the seat of Johnson County, a city of 1,694 on the Big Nemaha River where US 136 crosses NE 50, about 41 miles southeast of Lincoln. The square around the 1888–89 Johnson County Courthouse is the heart of a National Register historic district and a state-certified creative district, and the city has Johnson County Hospital, Johnson County Central schools and the county fairgrounds.

History

John Maulding laid out the town in the summer of 1856 near the junction of two trails, including the Brownville–Marysville road. It was first called Frances, traditionally for the wife of Richard M. Johnson (though Johnson never married; it may have honored territorial governor Francis Burt), and was renamed in 1857 for Tecumseh, the Shawnee leader Johnson was said to have killed at the Battle of the Thames. The territorial legislature made it the county seat on February 13, 1857, a post office opened that year, and the town was incorporated on February 4, 1867.

The Atchison & Nebraska Railroad, later part of the Burlington, brought its first train on April 25, 1872, and a Burlington line from Nemaha City followed in 1882–83. W. L. Dunlap opened the opera house in 1880, and the county built its courthouse in 1888–89 to plans by Lincoln architect William Gray. Nebraska's first rural mail delivery began here in November 1896, and the population peaked at 2,104 in 1940. Tecumseh State Correctional Institution opened north of town in 2001. Col. Barney Oldfield, Eisenhower's press aide and a Hollywood publicist, was born here, and Tecumseh was the main setting of the 1987 ABC miniseries Amerika.
