Elm Creek, Nebraska

Elm Creek is a village in Buffalo County, in south-central Nebraska, just off Interstate 80. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 979 residents.

History

Elm Creek was founded in August 1866 when the Union Pacific Railroad built its tracks through Buffalo County, and was named for a nearby creek lined with red elm trees. The village was incorporated on January 12, 1887, with an early business district that included three hotels, a bank, a flour mill, several general stores, and its own newspaper. A destructive fire on July 1, 1906 destroyed fourteen buildings in the downtown; the district was rebuilt afterward in stone and pressed brick, and the fire led to the town establishing a waterworks system and a volunteer fire department.

Location & Access

Elm Creek sits along U.S. Highway 30 and the Union Pacific mainline in eastern Buffalo County, with direct access to Interstate 80 at Exit 257. Kearney, the county seat, lies about 12 miles to the west.

Nearby Towns

Elm Creek is close to several other Buffalo County communities, including Overton to the east and Kearney to the west. The village’s Interstate 80 interchange makes it a convenient stop for travelers along the corridor.

Economy & Community

Agriculture and highway-oriented commerce anchor the local economy, supported by the village’s location on both US-30 and I-80. Elm Creek hosts Buffalo Stampede Days each year during the last weekend in August, a community celebration with roots in the town’s ranching and railroad history. For decades the village was also home to the Chevyland USA Museum, a well-known Chevrolet collection that operated from 1973 to 2019.

Education

Elm Creek Public Schools serves the village and surrounding rural area, with a high school addition completed in 2010 to accommodate the growing district.
