Kearney is the county seat of Buffalo County and the largest city in south-central Nebraska, sitting along Interstate 80 about a mile north of the Platte River. As of the 2020 census, Kearney had a population of 33,867, making it the fifth-most populous city in Nebraska.

History

The area was first settled along the Mormon and Overland trails in the late 1840s, when the U.S. Army established Fort Kearny in 1848 to protect westward migrants; the fort later served gold-rush travelers and Pony Express riders before closing in 1871. The first permanent settlement, known as Dobytown, sat about two miles southeast of the present city. Kearney was incorporated on December 3, 1873, and became the Buffalo County seat in 1874. According to local history, the extra "e" in the city's name was added by mistake after repeated misspellings by postal workers, distinguishing it from the fort's original "Kearny" spelling.

Kearney is one of the best-known viewing points for the spring Sandhill Crane migration along the Platte River, drawing visitors from around the world to see hundreds of thousands of cranes stage in the area each March. The University of Nebraska at Kearney, founded in 1905 as Nebraska State Normal School, anchors a 235-acre campus with more than 37 buildings.
