History

Thirty-five Mennonite families from South Russia, whose forebears had moved from Holland to the Crimea around 1790, settled here in York and Hamilton counties in 1874 on land bought from the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, which built an immigrant house to shelter them; by 1878 there were about 80 families. They brought Turkey Red hard winter wheat, which corn replaced after deep-well irrigation spread in the 1930s. The town was platted in 1887 when the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley (Chicago & North Western) built from York toward Hastings, and named for David Henderson, an early homesteader. Henderson incorporated on October 4, 1899. The railroad took up its tracks in 1941. Most residents still descend from the 1874 families.
