About Bradshaw

Bradshaw is a village of 273 people (2020) in western York County, at 1,719 feet on US 34 about 8 miles west of York; I-80 Exit 348 is about 7 miles south. The 1902–03 Bradshaw Town Hall, now the civic center, is on the National Register, and a state historical marker in the park at Lincoln and Jackson streets tells the town’s story. Bradshaw is on Central Time.

History

The Burlington & Missouri River platted Bradshaw in 1880 when it built west from York toward Grand Island, near the Nebraska City–Fort Kearny freight road, on land sold by Jesse and Mary Richards; the village took Mrs. Richards’s maiden name. On June 3, 1890, a tornado destroyed the village, killing 12 and injuring about 60; the 1890 census, taken just before, had counted 434 people, still the highest. The town rebuilt, and the Town Hall followed in 1902–03. The F5 tornado of May 5, 1964 — the last F5 recorded in Nebraska — passed just north of the village and killed two people on a farm about 3 miles northwest. Bradshaw’s school district merged with Henderson’s in 1998.
