Papillion, the Sarpy County seat, was platted in 1870 along the Burlington rail line and takes its name from the French word for “butterfly,” a nod to the many butterflies once seen along Papillion Creek.

Now home to the Omaha Storm Chasers Triple-A baseball team and several large Meta Platforms data centers, Papillion has grown from a 19th-century railroad town into one of the fastest-growing cities in the Omaha metro area, with a 2020 population of 24,159.
