About Gretna

Gretna is a city of 5,083 (2020) in western Sarpy County, on US 6 and NE 31 at I-80 exit 432, about 18 miles southwest of downtown Omaha; estimates since then put it above 9,000. It has Gretna Public Schools, the public library, Gretna Crossing Park and the Nebraska Crossing outlet mall, and holds Gretna Days each July.

History

Forest City, a trading post from 1856 and a town incorporated in 1858, stood about 2 miles west on the Omaha–Ashland road. When the Burlington built its Omaha–Ashland cutoff in the summer of 1886, Gretna began on the new line; the Lincoln Land Company platted it in 1887, the Forest City post office moved here, and Forest City faded. Gretna was named for Gretna Green, Scotland, home of some early settlers, and its Aberdeen, Angus and McKenna streets keep the Scottish tie. It incorporated on July 10, 1889.

Gretna had about 300 people in 1890 and still fewer than 500 in 1950. I-80 and Omaha's growth changed that: Nebraska Crossing opened in 1993 and was rebuilt in 2013, the Holy Family Shrine opened above the interstate in 2002, Gretna Crossing Park and its YMCA opened in 2023, and the 2020 census counted 5,083 people, the most yet.
