About Sacramento
Sacramento is an unincorporated place about 6 miles east-southeast of Holdrege in Phelps County. Little remains of the town. The Sacramento-Wilcox Wildlife Management Area, one of the largest public wetlands in the Rainwater Basin, is to the east.
History
Sacramento grew up in the late 1870s as a trading point on the high prairie, far from any railroad; the post office opened on February 9, 1879, and Andreas counted about 75 people in 1882. When the Burlington created Holdrege in 1883, most of Sacramento’s businesses moved to the new town. The post office closed in 1887, reopened in 1889 and closed for good in 1944.
