About Angus

Angus is an unincorporated community in northern Nuckolls County, on the Little Blue River about 7 miles north-northeast of Nelson and about 6 miles south of Edgar, near NE 4. It was an incorporated village until 1970. The map point is approximate.

History

The Ox Bow post office opened in 1873 near a flour mill on the Little Blue. When the Burlington built between Edgar and Nelson, the post office became Angus in December 1886, named for J. B. Angus, a former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy official. By 1890 Angus had about 125 people and two flouring mills; a United Brethren church was organized about 1886 and a Methodist church in 1899.

Charles M. Fuller Jr., who grew up here, built what is called the first automobile made in Nebraska in 1898. His Angus Automobile Company began production on February 16, 1907, and built more than 600 Fuller cars, the $2,500 Model A touring car the best seller, before Fuller left the firm; it moved to Nelson in 1910 and built no more cars. From the early 1920s to the late 1940s Angus had the county's first cement swimming pool. The voters chose unanimously to disincorporate in 1970, and the post office closed on July 18, 1975 (some sources say 1977). A sod house was built here in 1967 for Nebraska's centennial.
