About Julian

Julian is a village of 46 in northern Nemaha County, on the S-64A spur (Main Street) just west of US 75, about 9 miles north of Auburn and 11 miles south of Nebraska City.

History

Julian grew from a French settlement led by Laurent Bernard and Julian (Julien) Bahuaud; neighbors used Bahuaud's first name because they could not pronounce his last, and the village took it. A post office opened about 1880 at a farm home, and the place became a station on the Missouri Pacific. St. Bernard Catholic Church was founded in 1881, and Methodist and United Brethren churches followed. In 1900 Julian had 206 people, with a bank, a creamery, stores, a hotel and, from 1913, a brickyard.

In June 1899 Bahuaud was murdered for his money at his home south of the village; in 1913 one of the suspects confessed and was sent to prison. The school burned in 1917 and was replaced. The present St. Bernard church was dedicated in 1951. The post office closed in 1995. Jon Volkmer's novel Brave in Season (2023) is set in Julian.
