About Brock
Brock is a village of 123 in northwestern Nemaha County, on NE 67 by the Little Nemaha River, where NE 105 ends just west of town, about 9 miles northwest of Auburn and 5 miles north-northeast of Johnson.
History
The town was laid out in November 1854 as Dayton, and George Shroap, the first settler, came in the fall of 1855; the Dayton post office ran from 1856 to 1859. It was later called Howard, for Howard Bradley, then Clinton, for Clinton, Iowa, and, as a joke, Podunk. When the Missouri Pacific began running trains through in February 1882, the town was renamed Brock for a railroad official, and in 1882 it had about 200 people and 26 new buildings. D. C. Sanders had built a grist mill in 1867 and a sawmill in 1870.
Brock reached 543 people in 1900. A brick school built in 1905 burned in 1925 and was rebuilt; it closed in 2003, and students now go to Johnson. The Little Nemaha flooded the town in 1883, 1924, 1928, 1941 and 1951, and its channel was straightened in 1912. Coryell Park, between Brock and Johnson, with the Coryell family mausoleum, was given to the public in 1934.
