Brownville, established in 1854 by Richard Brown and incorporated in 1856, was Nebraska’s original Nemaha County seat and, in its steamboat-era heyday, reportedly the largest city in the entire territory. It grew rapidly as a Missouri River port before losing the county seat to Auburn in 1885 and settling into a much smaller existence.

Today’s Brownville, population 142, punches far above its size as a historic and arts destination. Its National Register-listed historic district includes the Carson House, the Governor Furnas House, and the Lyceum complex of shops and dining; the 1939 Brownville Bridge and the dry-docked Meriwether Lewis Dredge — now a museum on Missouri River history — round out its five museums. The town earned Preserve America Community designation in 2007, and Cooper Nuclear Station, one of Nebraska’s two nuclear plants, sits nearby. Eugene Allen Gilmore, later Acting Governor-General of the Philippines, was born here.
