About Meadow Grove

Meadow Grove is a village of 287 people (2020) in northwestern Madison County, at 1,637 feet on the north side of US 275, with the Elkhorn River about a mile north. Tilden is about 5 miles west-northwest and Norfolk about 16 miles east. The Cowboy Trail follows the old railroad past the village. Students attend Elkhorn Valley Schools in Tilden. Meadow Grove is on Central Time.

History

Perry V. Lewis came from New York in 1868, planted a cottonwood grove in 1873 and in 1883 built a gristmill on Buffalo Creek with French millstones. When the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad came through in 1879, it named its station Meadow Grove for the meadow to the west and Lewis’s grove to the south. Before the town, George Rouse kept the Deer Creek post office about 2 miles east. Lewis platted the town on his timber claim in 1886, and J. W. White was the first postmaster. Meadow Grove State Bank (1890) and Security Bank (1905) both closed in 1929. The village had its most people, 483, in 1930. Its school district joined Tilden’s in 1967 to form Elkhorn Valley Schools.
