History

Waverly was platted in 1870, when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad reached the site, and was named for Sir Walter Scott’s 1814 novel Waverley; several streets take their names from the book. It was incorporated as a village in 1885. The 1890 gazetteer called it an important grain-shipping point with several elevators and about 450 people. Its school district grew through consolidations from 1921 to 1966. The population was 310 in 1950 and has risen at every census since, reaching 4,279 in 2020.
