About Airpark

Airpark, also called Air Park or Arnold Heights, is a neighborhood of northwest Lincoln next to Lincoln Airport, built from the housing area of the former Lincoln Air Force Base. Arnold Elementary (Lincoln Public Schools) shares a building at 5000 Mike Scholl St. with a branch of Lincoln City Libraries and a recreation center. ZIP 68524.

History

Charles Lindbergh learned to fly in Lincoln in 1922, and the municipal airport was dedicated as Lindbergh Field in 1930. Lincoln Army Air Field was built in 1942 on 2,750 leased acres and closed in December 1945. The field reopened as Lincoln Air Force Base in 1952, with Strategic Air Command units from 1954: B-47 bombers, KC-97 tankers and 12 Atlas-F missiles, accepted in 1962 and deactivated in 1965. At its peak the base had about 6,200 airmen. It closed in 1966, and Lincoln annexed the area that year; the Lincoln Housing Authority took over about 1,000 housing units, about half of which are now privately owned. Arnold Elementary opened in 1959 for base families and moved into its present building in August 2009. The Nebraska Air National Guard’s 155th Air Refueling Wing flies from the airport.
