Norman, Nebraska

Norman is a small incorporated village in Kearney County, located in the agricultural plains of south-central Nebraska. One of five incorporated communities in the county, Norman represents the persistence of Nebraska's rural settlement pattern — a village established during the homestead era that has remained on the map through more than a century of rural change. The community is situated in Kearney County's agricultural landscape, surrounded by the cropland and grassland that characterize the region between the Platte and Republican river valleys.

Norman is among Nebraska's smallest incorporated villages. Despite its small size, it maintains its status as a distinct community in western Kearney County, a testament to the staying power of Nebraska's rural communities even as the agricultural economy has changed dramatically over the decades.

History

Norman was established during the late nineteenth century as settlers homesteaded the western portions of Kearney County. Like the other small communities in the county, Norman provided local services to the farm families of the surrounding townships — a post office, gathering place, and community identity for the residents of this section of the plains.

The village was incorporated at a time when Nebraska had hundreds of small towns scattered across the agricultural landscape, each serving the dense rural population that worked the surrounding farms. As farm consolidation accelerated through the twentieth century, many of Nebraska's smallest villages declined or disappeared. Norman has persisted, maintaining its incorporation and its identity as a distinct place in Kearney County.
