About Heartwell

Heartwell is a village of 80 people (2020) in northeastern Kearney County, on US 6/34 about 11 miles east-northeast of Minden and 21 miles west of Hastings. It covers less than a tenth of a square mile and has Holy Family Catholic Church. Heartwell is on Central Time.

History

Heartwell grew up around 1883 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy built through. It is named for James B. Heartwell, a banker and broker who came to Hastings in 1879 and served as its city treasurer. The surrounding Eaton Township was settled largely by Scottish and Irish families. Heartwell was first counted in the 1920 census, with 140 people, and peaked at 182 in 1930. A renewable diesel plant east of Hastings is named Heartwell Renewables, but it is in Adams County, not in the village.
