About Giltner

Giltner is a village of 406 people (2020) in southwestern Hamilton County, at 1,831 feet about 10 miles southwest of Aurora. Spur 41B connects it with I-80 at Exit 324 and with US 34 to the north. Giltner has its own K–12 school, the Hornets, and United Methodist and St. Joseph’s Catholic churches, and it holds Giltner Daze each June. Giltner is on Central Time.

History

The Lincoln Land Company platted the town on May 25, 1886, on the Burlington’s new branch from Aurora to Hastings, and named it Huntington, for a railroad employee’s Pennsylvania hometown. Its mail kept going to Hartington, so in February 1887 it became Bromfield, and the Lerton post office moved in. Confusion with Bloomfield brought one more change, made official on September 14, 1895: Giltner, for Rev. H. M. Giltner, who had founded the Presbyterian church in 1893. The village incorporated on December 11, 1888, and in 1903 was a charter member of the short-lived Central Nebraska baseball league. The Giltner Gazette ran from 1901 to 1962. Giltner peaked at 410 people in 1910 and had 406 in 2020.
