About Filley

Filley is a village of 124 in eastern Gage County on US 136, about 11 miles east of Beatrice, near where NE 4 splits off toward Virginia. The Elijah Filley Stone Barn stands about 1.5 miles south.

History

Elijah Filley established Cottage Hill Farm here in 1867 and became a leading stockman, shipping more than 500 carloads of cattle and hogs a year by 1881 and serving in the legislature. After the drought and grasshoppers of 1873–74 he hired out-of-work neighbors to build a three-story limestone bank barn, finished on November 10, 1874, after 88 days. When the Burlington built through in 1882 he founded the town, platted in April 1883, with W. A. Waddington as postmaster. The population peaked at 301 in 1890. Actor Robert Taylor was born in Filley in 1911.
