Maywood is a village of 262 people (2020) in western Frontier County, on NE 23 at 2,681 feet; US 83 joins NE 23 just west of town. Curtis is about 7 miles east-southeast and Wellfleet about 9 miles northwest. Maywood has its own school district, Maywood Public Schools, a grocery and a campground at Maywood Village Park. Hugh Butler Lake (Red Willow Reservoir) is about 21 miles south. Maywood is on Central Time.

History

The post office opened in 1881 as Laird, named for settler James Laird. It was later renamed Maywood, for May Wood, daughter of the townsite owner Israel Wood (some references spell the family name Woods), to avoid confusion with Laird, Colorado, on the same railroad line. The Lincoln Land Company platted the town after the Woods sold the land. Maywood peaked at 533 people in 1920.
