Waterloo is a village in Douglas County, Nebraska, founded in 1883 by Elias Kelsey and John Logan, though a Union Pacific Railroad stop had already been designated at the site as early as 1870. The name possibly commemorates either the Battle of Waterloo or Kelsey's own birthplace of Waterloo, New York. The young settlement was temporarily abandoned following the Great Flood of 1881, one of the most severe floods in the Platte and Missouri River valleys' recorded history, before the town was formally established two years later. Waterloo's most notable native is George E. Cryer, who served as the 32nd mayor of Los Angeles from 1921 to 1929. Today Waterloo operates the Douglas County West Community Schools, a consolidated district formed with neighboring Valley in 2005. With a population of 935 (2020 census), Waterloo remains a village along the Elkhorn River in western Douglas County.
