About Waterbury

History

George Herrick donated 80 acres to the Pacific Townsite Company in 1889, and Waterbury grew up as the Pacific Short Line was completed through the county in 1890. It was named for a spring that supplied the railroad's water station. By 1896 it had about 125 people, a depot, grain warehouses, coal yards, three general stores, a creamery and a Methodist church built in 1895.

The population peaked at 204 in 1930. The railroad is now owned by BNSF.
