About Allen
Allen is a village of 355 on NE 9 in south-central Dixon County, about 3 miles south of US 20. It has Allen Consolidated Schools, the Dixon County Museum, Springbank Library, Security Bank and Countryside Gas N Grocery.
History
Henry Allen homesteaded the townsite in 1870. The town was founded in 1890, when the Pacific Short Line, built from Sioux City toward O'Neill, laid track through the county; the same line started Waterbury and Dixon. Allen incorporated as a village on May 16, 1893, and by 1896 had about 300 people, a graded school, Catholic and Methodist churches and three lodges.
The population peaked at 489 in 1930. In May 1939 about 300 residents petitioned to move the county seat from Ponca to Allen; the petition was rejected for lack of signatures. The railroad through Allen is now owned by BNSF.
