The Robert Henri Museum and Art Gallery, 218 E. 8th St. in Cozad, is in the Hendee Hotel, built in 1879 by town founder John J. Cozad as a hotel and family home. The Cozads lived there until 1883, after Cozad shot rancher Alfred Pearson in a land dispute in 1882 and the family left Nebraska under new names; his son Robert Henry Cozad became the painter Robert Henri (1865–1929). Stephen A. Hendee bought the building and ran it as a hotel. It has been on the National Register since 1979. The grounds include a historic walkway, a church and a schoolhouse. The museum has been open May through September, Tuesday to Saturday.
