Description

This state historical marker on US 136 about 1.2 miles west of Oxford tells of the Republican River flood of May 30–31, 1935. Heavy rain in eastern Colorado and southwest Nebraska sent a wall of water down the valley; the river spread to about four miles wide, more than 100 people died, several of them from the Oxford area, and damage ran to millions of dollars. The flood led the federal government to build a series of dams in the Republican basin.
