The Plum Creek Massacre site and Plum Creek Cemetery are at Road 748 and B Road, 9 miles north and 1 mile east of Bertrand, near the Platte. On August 8, 1864, Cheyenne warriors attacked a train of twelve freight wagons near the Plum Creek stage station, killing eleven or more men and carrying off Nancy Jane Morton and the boy Danny Marble; Mrs. Morton was ransomed in January 1865. (A 1930 marker gives the date as August 7.) The Phelps County Historical Society has restored the cemetery, where more than 200 graves have been marked, and markers tell of the massacre, the Oregon Trail and the Pony Express.
