Norwegian settlers came up Deer Creek in 1873 and organized the Deer Creek Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in October 1877. A. E. Phillipson gave an acre on the west bank of the creek in 1888, and the present church, about 2½ miles north-northwest of Holbrook, was begun in 1903 and dedicated in May 1904. Its cemetery is beside it.
