The Lincoln Highway Seedling Mile, on E. Seedling Mile Rd. about 2 miles east-northeast of downtown Grand Island, is a surviving piece of one of the concrete “seedling miles” the Lincoln Highway Association built to show the value of paved roads. Finished on November 3, 1915, it was Nebraska’s first and the second in the nation; the original mile ran east from Willow Street to near the Seedling Mile School, paid for with donated cement and $1,170 raised by Fred W. Ashton. A 1931 realignment left a 315-foot section in place, the only one known to survive intact, with a state historical marker. It was listed on the National Register in 2013.
