Harlan County Dam, about 2 miles south of Republican City, was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1946 to 1952 after the 1935 Republican River flood and dedicated on June 10, 1952. The earthfill embankment is about 11,800 feet long and 107 feet high. Harlan County Lake behind it, Nebraska's second-largest, covers about 13,000 acres with about 75 miles of shoreline from Alma to the dam and reaches into Phillips County, Kansas. The lake serves flood control, irrigation and recreation, with Corps campgrounds at Methodist Cove and Hunter Cove, day-use areas, outlet parks, the Cedar Run ATV Trail and more than 17,000 acres open to hunting. The project office at 70788 Corps Road A is open weekdays 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; call for lake levels and ramp status.
