Carhenge, on NE 87 about 3 miles north of Alliance, is a replica of Stonehenge built from 38 vintage American cars painted gray, set in a circle about 96 feet across. Jim Reinders and some 35 family members built it in summer 1987 as a memorial to his father and dedicated it at the June solstice; the Friends of Carhenge gave it to the City of Alliance on October 1, 2013. About 4,000 people watched the August 21, 2017, solar eclipse here. Free and open every day, with the Pit Stop gift shop and the Car Art Reserve of other car sculptures. Phone (308) 762-3569.
