About Emerson

Emerson is a village of 840 on NE 9 just south of NE 35, the only Nebraska town in three counties. The village puts about 46% of its area in Dixon County, 28% in Dakota County and 26% in Thurston County; the three meet on Main Street, and the state files the village under Dakota County. It has Emerson-Hubbard Public Schools, the Emerson Medical Clinic, the Emerson Public Library, a village RV park and bars and a fuel stop on South Main.

History

The Omaha Road bought 100 acres at what was then called Demy's Junction in October 1880, where its Sioux City–Omaha line met the branch to Norfolk; a depot and section house were the first buildings, and the town was founded in 1881. First known as Kennesaw Junction, it was renamed for Ralph Waldo Emerson, platted by R. E. Kuhn in 1883 and incorporated on July 7, 1888. The post office has operated since 1882, and up to 67 trains a day passed through into the 1930s.

The population peaked at 891 in 1930. Emerson City Park, the block between 4th and 5th streets on the west side of Main, is in the Dixon County part of town; each of its arched corner entrances was built by a different local group, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. The arches have been lit for the holidays since 1981. Craig Sams, founder of Green & Black's chocolate, and Archbishop Daniel E. Sheehan are from Emerson.
