About Tabor
Tabor is a former Czech farm settlement in Lincoln Township, northeastern Colfax County, about 4.5 miles south-southeast of Howells. It never had a post office. The Tabor cemetery remains; whether the old St. Mary's church still stands is not confirmed.
History
Czech settlers reached Maple Creek in 1870 and named the settlement for the city of Tábor in Bohemia, the home district of many Colfax County Czechs. The first Catholic service was held on Christmas Day 1871 in Josef F. Sindelar's sod house, and a public school opened in 1874. St. Mary's Church (Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary) was built in 1880; it never had a resident priest and was served from Heun. In the 1890s a Catholic hall nearby held lodge meetings and socials.
Funerals were still held at St. Mary's in 1991, but the church no longer appears in Archdiocese of Omaha listings. The Osada Tabor ("Tabor settlement") cemetery, with mostly Czech inscriptions, has burials from 1881 to the 1970s. The Midland (1872–1884) and Curry (1882–1890) post offices were a few miles southwest.
