History
Edgar was established in 1873 with the extension of the railroad through southern Clay County, following closely on the heels of other Clay County railroad towns. A post office was first established at Edgar in 1872, even before the town was formally platted, reflecting the eagerness of settlers to claim this fertile prairie land. The town was named for the son of a pioneer settler, a common naming practice in early Nebraska.
Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Edgar developed as an agricultural service center with grain storage, retail stores, and community institutions. The city has maintained its role as a service center for southern Clay County, even as its population has gradually declined from a high of around 539 residents in 2000 to 428 in 2020.
