History
Fairfield's history begins in 1872 with the extension of the railroad through Clay County, which opened the surrounding prairie to rapid settlement. Like many Clay County towns, Fairfield grew quickly as homesteaders arrived to claim the fertile land and the railroad made commerce possible. The community established schools, churches, and businesses that made it a functioning small town within a few years of its founding.
The city's most distinguished historical connection is to Samuel Roy McKelvie, born in Fairfield in 1881. McKelvie went on to become a prominent Nebraska political figure, serving as Lieutenant Governor and then as the 19th Governor of Nebraska. His career reflected the ambition and civic engagement that characterized Nebraska's early twentieth-century leadership.
Fairfield has maintained its community identity through more than a century of agricultural change, adapting to the consolidation of farms and the mechanization of agriculture while keeping its schools, civic organizations, and community pride intact.
