About Magnet

Magnet is a village of 46 in southwestern Cedar County, on a short spur south of NE 59 near US 81. It has Magnet Town Park, the village office, post office and fire hall; Randolph, about 10 miles south, has the nearest services.

History

B. E. Smith platted Magnet in 1893, when the Omaha Road extended its Randolph branch toward Bloomfield, and chose the name so the town would attract settlers "as the magnet attracts iron." The post office opened on April 21, 1894, and the population peaked at 178 in 1910.

Fire destroyed a block of Main Street in February 1925, and tornadoes struck in 1937 and 1975. The railroad tracks were removed in 1965.
